   he title of this piece is an obvious play on words, referring to the fruit of the paddle cactus, or "prickly pear".  A brief comparison of this thorny plant and these spiney reptiles reveals some obvious similarities.

  n the hostile desert environment,  survival may pivot on having one "gift" that can thwart the intent of those who desire to consume you.  Among the horned toad's arsenal of survival gifts is its thorny exterior, which, at the very least, will give a would-be diner pause to reconsider.
